150 citizens from all European Member States who have been taking part in a unique pan-European debate on how to tackle the economic and social challenges facing Europe have met top policy-makers in Brussels to hand over their recommendations at the 2009 European Citizens’ Summit..

Five Irish citizens were among 150 citizens from across the EU who took part in the pan-European summit in Brussels. They were Evelyn Boylan from Scotstown, County Monaghan; Noreen Kelly, Ballyvolane, Cork City; Niall O’Reilly from Maynooth, County Kildare; and Dubliners Brid Bowles, from Lusk and Michael Morrissey, Cabinteely (foreground) who was asked to share a platform with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and other top policy-makers.

Irish awareness of emergency number low

The emergency number was first introduced in 1991 and in 1998 all EU members were legally obliged to ensure that the number could be dialled free of charge from fixed lines and mobile phones.The 112 number, which complements Ireland's national emergency number of 999, is designed to be used by Europeans who travel throughout Europe and who find themselves in an emergency situation abroad.Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Romania have all decided to make 112 their national emergency number.

Norkom in anti-fraud tech deal with one of world’s top 10 banks

Irish software company Norkom has struck a deal with Banco Santander, one of the world’s top 10 banks, and the largest bank in the Eurozone, to deploy its anti-fraud and anti-money laundering technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Banco Santander can deploy this suite across all its European and Latin American operations, helping it to comply with national and international regulations, such as the 3rd EU Money Laundering Directive. The first implementation will be in Spain.

Ireland is also more dependent on fossil fuels than almost any other EU country and we import the vast majority of our fuel requirements. The salt, this « killer hidden », and his accomplice, the sugar, are in our food for the most poor reasons which are: - It returns the heavier goods, by keeping some water, - It reinforces the taste of a flavourless product because of poorer quality, badly kept, or diluted in some cheap "Excipient", - It gives thirst, therefore encourages the consumption of drinks (themselves salt and sweet). Hypertension, Obesity, Diabetes and deficit of National Insurance. Our health is therefore worth less dear than their benefits?
